We will look at how, White privilege/ superiority, growing importance of social media, the challenges on feminist movements in the Arab world & various wars in the Middle East (which the West are involved in) effected the dance industry. In addition we will analyse how these issues have lead to the growing domination of Western & Foreign dancers in Egypt, bringing up the important question: What does the future hold for "Egyptian" Bellydance?

How to Map Your Music, from Fact to Fantasy

a 4-part system for musical confidence

Alia Thabit

It’s important for us to understand the meaning of lyrics in songs we dance on. It’s important to understand the cultural relevance of things like improvisation ad micromovement. Knowing these things makes our dance better, more nuanced, more authentic. It’s also important to understand the structure of our music–so we don’t get lost, so we know when to change, so we know what’s coming down the pick even with an unfamiliar song. Lots of music is pretty simple–there’s a verse, a chorus, maybe a taqsim. And then some of it is more complex. A LOT more complex. And then there’s all that music that sounds the same all the way through. It can be puzzling…

Rewriting History

Respectability Politics and Revisionist History

in Contemporary Egyptian Bellydance

Nisaa of St. Louis

Current trends in the Egyptian belly dance industry are generating a lot of discussion, and sometimes controversy, both inside and outside Egypt. A common refrain that echoes throughout present-day discourse about the dance is that today’s dancers – particularly foreign dancers working in Cairo – are deviating from proper technique, aesthetic, and behavior. Critics of the contemporary scene look to the dance and dancers of prior eras – the raqs sharqi performers of the Golden Era, the awalim of the early 19th century, and even the jawari of medieval Egypt – as benchmarks of artistry and respectability, and lament that belly dance in the present day has been degraded through the incorporation of athletic feats and sexualized movement. Yet, the dance past that is presented as a counterpoint to the present scene is often highly romanticized and even factually inaccurate. In reality, dancers in all eras of Egyptian history have existed as marginal figures in their society. And though technique and costuming have certainly evolved over the centuries, aspects of current dance trends have documented precedent in earlier periods. Join Nisaa for an examination of the reality of dance and dancers in earlier periods of Egyptian history based on primary source documentation, and gain a more objective perspective on current trends in Egyptian belly dance.

Fabulously Informative

I  wanted to write to tell you how good this year’s bundle is. To be honest, I was a little skeptical about having two segments, the dance and the lecture. I am finding it fabulously informative, and creates a very well-rounded curriculum which — for a serious dancer — is exactly what one wants. The lectures in particular have been great; even if I don’t learn something specifically new to me from a presenter, I am finding myself very inspired. During the continued wonkiness of Covid, inspiration is rare and precious.

Fabulously Informative

I would recommend the Bundle for the diversity. Of teachers, dance styles, teaching styles, techniques, exercises... I love that there were long courses, shorter courses, some choreography-based, some technique-based, some improv, some styling... And lectures on a diversity of topics relating to dance but also to relating subjects like self-esteem, social media, history, etc. The Bundle is SO GOOD... even if you don't do all the classes it's worth it!
