Learning Through "The Tables": A Framework on Which to Build Your Research

Using her iconic tables metaphor Sahra will walk you through a fundamental idea of dance ethnology: finding the categories that a culture uses to describe their own dance. With examples of the different categorizations, or tables, of dance in Egypt you can better understand what you're seeing/reading/observing when you're working on your dance.

Sahra will provide some questions you can ask to more accurately asses your sources and process the massive amount of information we pursue in our studies that she has developed in over 30 years of dance-ethnological research in Egypt.

Current Controversies: Contextualizing and Complexifying Raqs Sharqi in Cairo’s Disco-Clubs

Let’s be honest; if you’re practicing raqs sharqi outside of Cairo, you’ve probably had moments of ‘dance culture shock’, at some of the dancing coming out of Egypt, particularly the social media exposure of disco-clubs. From ever-changing costuming, aesthetics, and musicality to scandalous gossip and headlines of viral vulgarity and arrests, current controversies abound and circulate.

This lecture contextualizes and complexifies these ‘controversies’ through feminist dance ethnography grounded in years of fieldwork. We’ll explore not only what’s going on in Cairo, but also listen deeper to understand how these controversies coalesce with larger trans/national gender and sexuality politics of policing and possibility.

MENAHT Dancers of Color

Bellydancers Call to Action

Our webinar approach will emphasize learning history; including what racism is, where it comes from, how it functions, why it persists, and it's impact within our community.

We aim to cultivate accountability within our community, create networks to protect, empower, and promote Black and Brown Bellydancer teachers and performers domestically and internationally.

In our webinar, we will discuss power dynamics and how it is used to promote racial divisions within our dance community.

Racism within the Bellydance community can be undone through effective anti-racist community grassroots organizing, discussions, and accountability. We believe that effective community and institutional change only happens when those who serve as its leaders understand the foundations of racism, racial microaggressions, and how they continually function as a barrier to the bellydance community.

"Keeping Up With Bellydance"

The lack of practice motivation, dealing with competition, creative blocks, etc. - if not addressed and supported, can lead to a decline in interest and self-confidence when it comes to bellydance- whether you're a student or a professional. This becomes even more pertinent in the era of Covid-19! "Keeping Up With Bellydance" is a two-part, comprehensive lecture that aims at developing the original ideas presented by Shruti in her lecture, "Dealing With Creative Blocks" for her "Beyond Bellydance", International Lecture series.

These sessions will delve deep into possible problems and draw inspiration for workable solutions/insights from Shruti's professional bellydance experiences. The lecture will help the attendees untangle themselves from the ideas of "perfectionism", cognitive pressures, choreographer blocks and throw light on realistic solutions for any possible downswings we may face as dancers, either now or in the future.

Until we found ourselves in a world wide pandemic and online performances the only option to sharing our art. Thus dancers found themselves learning about cameras, lighting, sound, editing, and more in the new wild west of dance performance~ video! Join Aubre for this look at video art and how to use video to enhance your artistic dance expression and not just document it.

Dr. Sherifa

Egyptian Dance: Authenticity versus Globalization

Globalization, underway since the 1920s and which accelerated since the 1990s has radically transformed dance performances, their settings, purpose, music, audiences, appearance and dance technique. Mostly, this has transformed raqs sharqi, as
dancers outside of Egypt have primarily treated other forms of Egyptian dance as variety acts, or sub-specializations. Raqs sharqi as now performed, does not bear much resemblance to the historical versions we see in Egyptian cinema from the 1960s.

Following the sahwa (the Islamic revival), that began in 1979, many Egyptian women exited the entertainment profession due to social pressure and preachers calling for them to repent. Increasingly, nightclubs closed, weddings no longer routinely
featured raqs sharqi and foreign dancers were hired. Foreign dancers also impacted the international teaching scene, where Egyptian performers compete with them, but must also cater to hobbyist sensibilities. Now we have reached a stage where
some dancers still perceive Egypt as the true source of raqs sharqi, whereas others do not even use or understand Arabic music, and are unaware of the many cultural factors shaping the dance.
